Stump Grinding for Kew Properties

Kew has extensive Heritage Overlays particularly around Studley Park and the streets backing onto the Yarra River, with Vegetation Protection Overlays covering the river escarpment. Cotham Road, High Street and the leafy backstreets around Walpole Street are typical Kew tree work areas, with mature gardens hosting some of Boroondara's oldest trees. Stump grinding in Kew often follows tree removal: the tree species, the council requirements, and how to work around mature gardens. Every job is led by a Cert III qualified arborist, fully insured to $20 million, and finished with complete site clean-up.

Kew's established trees often include established oaks, elms, gums, claret ash, magnolias. Each species has its own stump grinding considerations, particularly when access is constrained by narrow side passages, overhead power lines, or neighbouring properties typical of Kew blocks. Our approach is methodical, safety-first, and tailored to each tree.

We grind to roughly 200 to 300mm below ground level, which is enough for turf, garden beds, or general landscaping. Deeper grinding is available where needed, such as for new footings or paving. Surface roots radiating out from the stump are ground as part of the job, not left behind to surface later.

Common Reasons People Get a Stump Ground

After a Tree Removal

The natural follow-on. Combined with a removal it's faster, cheaper than having a separate operator come back later.

Replanting the Space

You can't plant a new tree on top of an old stump. Grinding clears the space and lets the new planting establish properly.

Laying Turf or Garden Beds

Stumps prevent uniform turf and look awful in garden beds. Grinding gets you to a clean, plantable surface.

Suckering Species

Some species (privet, ash, plum) keep sending up shoots from roots if the stump remains. Grinding stops the regrowth at the source.

Hazards and Trip Risks

Old stumps hidden in long grass or garden beds are a real hazard, particularly for kids and elderly visitors.

Termite and Pest Concerns

Old stumps attract termites and other pests. Removing them protects the rest of your garden and any nearby structures.

How Stump Grinding Works

The process is mechanical and straightforward, but access and grinder size make a real difference to how clean the result is. Our typical approach:

  • Access check. Most domestic grinders need a gate width of around 750mm. We can quote without seeing the site if you can confirm gate width or send photos.
  • Underground services check. We check for gas, water, NBN and electrical lines near the stump. Dial Before You Dig if there's any doubt.
  • Surface clearance. We clear rocks, debris and any landscaping fabric that could damage the grinder teeth or fling debris.
  • Grinding. The cutter wheel works the stump down in passes, with surface roots ground out around the edges.
  • Depth. Standard is 200 to 300mm below ground. Deeper available for paving or footings.
  • Backfill option. Grindings can be left in the hole as backfill (cheapest), or fully removed if you're replanting or laying turf.

🌱 Replanting Where a Stump Was

If you're planning to replant a new tree in the same spot, stump grinding alone often isn't enough. The remaining grindings are acidic and high in carbon, which can starve a new tree of nitrogen and stunt its growth. For replanting we usually recommend either fully removing the grindings and replacing with fresh soil, or grinding deeper than standard. Worth flagging when you book in so we can quote accordingly.
