What We Do
Professional Tree Removal for Canterbury Properties
Canterbury is characterised by its grand Edwardian and Federation homes, particularly along Canterbury Road, Mont Albert Road and Bryson Street. Significant heritage overlays cover much of the suburb, and many gardens host mature canopy trees that have been in place for over a century, including oak, elm and plane tree specimens of considerable size. Tree removal in Canterbury requires local knowledge: the tree species, the council requirements, and how to work around mature gardens. Every job is led by a Cert III qualified arborist, fully insured to $20 million, and finished with complete site clean-up.
Canterbury's established trees often include mature oaks, English elms, plane trees, copper beeches, magnolias. Each species has its own removal considerations, particularly when access is constrained by narrow side passages, overhead power lines, or neighbouring properties typical of Canterbury blocks. Our approach is methodical, safety-first, and tailored to each tree.
Tree removal sounds simple until you've seen it go wrong. Confined access, overhead power lines, neighbouring fences, heritage buildings, soft ground, and trees that have been weakened by decay all change the work substantially. Our approach is methodical, well-planned and safety-first, with the right gear and the right people for the size of the job.
When Removal Is The Right Call
Reasons People Call Us For Tree Removal
Dead or Dying Trees
Trees with significant deadwood, decay, fungal brackets or visible decline. Often a falling hazard, particularly in storm season.
Structural Damage Risk
Roots lifting paths or pavers, branches over roofs or pools, trees too close to footings or boundary fences.
Renovation or Build Sites
Clearing space for extensions, pools, garages or landscaping. We coordinate with builders and respect tree protection zones.
Self-Sown or Invasive Species
Plane trees, willows, privets, pittosporums and other species that have outgrown their spot or are crowding the garden.
Post-Storm Damage
Trees that survived the storm but are now compromised, leaning, or showing visible cracks at major unions.
Replanting With Something Better
Mature ornamental pears, conifers or shrubs that have outgrown the space. We remove, grind the stump, and leave you ready to replant.
How A Typical Removal Runs
Most residential removals follow a similar pattern, though every job has its own quirks. Here's what to expect:
- Site assessment. We photograph the tree, surrounding structures, access points and overhead hazards. For larger jobs we walk the site together to confirm scope.
- Written quote. Itemised scope, timing, what's included, and any permit considerations flagged clearly. No vague hourly rates.
- Permit liaison if needed. Many councils across Melbourne's east require permits for canopy tree removal. We advise on what applies and can prepare arborist reports for council applications.
- Set-up and safety. Traffic management if needed, ground protection, clear exclusion zones around the work area.
- Sectional dismantling or felling. Most urban removals are dismantled piece-by-piece by a climbing arborist. Open blocks may allow controlled felling.
- Stump grinding. Optional but recommended if you're replanting or laying turf. We grind to roughly 200 to 300mm below ground.
- Full site clean-up. All cuttings, branches and chip removed. Optional mulch left on site if you'd like it.
🏛️ Boroondara Council Permits
Under the Boroondara Tree Protection Local Law 2024, canopy trees with a trunk circumference of 110cm or more (measured at 1.4m above ground) require a permit before removal. Canterbury's extensive Heritage Overlays add a second layer of approval that often applies in addition to the tree law. We've handled permit applications across Boroondara extensively and can guide you through the process, including preparing the certified arborist report most applications require. We know which trees on a Canterbury property are likely to need permits and which won't, before we even arrive on site.
